The Waterproofing Layer
Bathroom tile work that fails almost always fails at the waterproofing stage, not the tile stage. Water that gets behind wall tile in a shower will reach the wood framing eventually, and by the time you notice it from the surface, the damage is already done. We install a sheet membrane or liquid-applied waterproofing system before any tile goes up on shower walls. The specific product depends on the substrate and the scope, but the commitment to a proper barrier is not optional.
For tub surrounds, we use cement backer board with a moisture-resistant membrane at seams and transitions. Shower floors get a pre-sloped mortar bed or a pre-formed foam shower tray, depending on the configuration, so water drains toward the drain without pooling.
Wall Tile: What the Decision Points Are
Wall tile in a bathroom is about aesthetics first, but the format and finish you choose affect the installation. Glossy tiles show mortar telegraphing through the face if the wall is not flat — we check for plumb and flat before tiling and correct where needed. Large-format wall tiles require back-buttering each piece individually to achieve the minimum required contact coverage. Handmade tiles like zellige have irregular faces and need a slightly different layout approach to prevent pattern buildup.
