Kitchen Backsplash

One of the most visible surfaces in the home — the details in the installation show up every day.

What Goes Into a Backsplash Installation

A kitchen backsplash sounds like a straightforward project, and in some ways it is — but it is also the most visible tile surface in the home. The grout lines run at eye level. Every outlet cut, every corner return, every transition to the countertop edge is front and center. We take those details seriously.

We back-butter each tile individually rather than relying solely on the wall mortar — this ensures good contact coverage across the full back of the tile and prevents hollow spots that can cause tiles to pop off over time, especially in kitchens where temperature and humidity fluctuate. The mortar we use depends on the tile material: white polymer-modified thinset for glass or light-colored tile, standard gray thinset for ceramic and most porcelain, and large-format mortar for slabs over 15 inches.

Tile Types We Install on Backsplashes

Subway tile in classic brick pattern. Large-format porcelain slabs. Handmade zellige with its characteristic irregular glaze. Mosaic sheets, including glass and stone. Vertical stack patterns. Each of these has a different installation requirement, and the grout joint sizing and spacing matter more than most homeowners realize — a 1/16-inch joint looks very different from a 1/4-inch joint in the same tile.

We will talk through the options if you are still deciding. Some tile types that look appealing in photos are more difficult to keep clean or to install precisely — we will give you an honest read on what to expect.

The Outlet Problem

Electrical outlets in a backsplash zone need to be cut around cleanly — not covered, not left with visible gaps. We use a combination of tile nippers and a diamond wet-saw to make precise outlet cutouts, and we adjust outlet box extenders when needed so the cover plate sits flush against the tile face. This is one of those details that separates a careful install from a rushed one.

Common Questions About Backsplash Tile

Do I need to remove my countertop first?

Generally, no. Backsplash tile is installed above the countertop, so the countertop stays in place. We protect the countertop surface during the install and seal the tile-to-countertop joint with a flexible caulk that matches the grout color rather than grouting it rigid.

How do I know what grout color to choose?

Matching grout to the tile makes the tile the visual focus and minimizes the grid pattern. Contrasting grout emphasizes the pattern itself. Neither is wrong — it depends on the look you want. We can show you physical samples against your tile before committing.

Can I tile over existing backsplash?

Sometimes, if the existing tile is firmly adhered and flat. We check first. Tiling over a loose surface causes the new installation to fail at the same rate as the old one. If demo is needed, we scope that into the estimate upfront.
