Beige Zellige Kitchen Backsplash in Harbor Gateway

Dark wood kitchen with glossy beige square zellige tile backsplash and track lighting in Harbor Gateway home

About This Project

A kitchen backsplash replacement in a Harbor Gateway home, swapping older painted tile for glossy handmade beige zellige squares. The dark wood cabinetry and the warm beige glaze of the zellige work naturally together — the tile's irregular surface catches the track lighting overhead and creates a subtle depth that painted tile cannot replicate. Zellige tiles have inherent variation in both dimension and face — we laid the tile out dry first to distribute the color variation evenly before setting, which prevents clusters of darker or lighter tiles from forming. White polymer-modified thinset was used to avoid any gray showing through the lighter glaze areas. The tile runs from counter to underside of the upper cabinets, with clean cuts at all cabinet returns and outlet cutouts made with a diamond hole saw for the circular boxes and a wet saw for the rectangular ones.

What We Did

01
Removed existing painted tile, repaired drywall, sealed surface before tiling
02
Dry-laid tiles to distribute glaze variation evenly across the installation field
03
Set tiles with white polymer thinset, adjusting joint width by eye for zellige dimensional variation
04
Grouted, sealed, caulked counter joint and cabinet returns
