Beige Zellige Kitchen Backsplash in Lomita
About This Project
This kitchen backsplash in a Lomita home replaced existing painted drywall with handmade beige zellige square tiles. The dark wood cabinetry and glossy beige zellige glaze create a warm, considered palette that suits Lomita's predominantly residential character well. Zellige tiles are kiln-fired in traditional Moroccan fashion, which means each tile has slight variation in thickness, face flatness, and glaze color — qualities that read as depth and warmth in the installed surface. Installation requires setting each tile individually by hand rather than using consistent spacers, and adjusting the mortar bed thickness tile-by-tile to compensate for the back-face variation. The result, when done with care, is a surface that looks handcrafted because it is. We used white thinset throughout and a warm-toned sanded grout that complements the glaze without fighting it.
