Gray Limestone-Look Kitchen Floor in Lomita

Bright open kitchen with large gray limestone-look floor tiles and cream shaker island in Lomita home

About This Project

This kitchen floor replacement in a Lomita home used large-format gray limestone-look porcelain in a straight-lay pattern throughout an open-plan kitchen and dining area. The tile's matte limestone texture and soft gray tones complement the cream shaker cabinetry and warm wood barstools naturally — a palette that works in Lomita's bright, sun-filled homes near PCH. The floor runs continuously from the kitchen through the adjacent dining area without a transition strip, which required careful planning to ensure the tile layout centered between the kitchen island and the perimeter walls so cuts land proportionally on both sides. The limestone-look porcelain is a rectified tile, which allowed us to use a 1/8-inch joint throughout — wide enough to grout cleanly but tight enough to keep the floor reading as a unified surface rather than a grid.

What We Did

01
Assessed existing floor, removed old flooring, checked slab for flatness and corrected low spots
02
Struck layout lines centered between island and perimeter walls to plan symmetrical cuts
03
Set large-format limestone-look porcelain with polymer-modified thinset, maintaining 1/8-inch joints
04
Grouted with matching gray sanded grout, sealed, caulked perimeter and island base
